Democracy at Work Institute Receives New Profit Investment to Expand Economic Opportunity Through Worker Ownership

The Democracy at Work Institute is excited to announce our selection as one of five organizations to join New Profit’s Build Portfolio, which supports organizations “with transformative strategies that advance pathways to income generation and financial health.” DAWI and each of the new Build Portfolio organizations will receive $1.5 million in unrestricted funding, which is provided alongside strategic advisory support.

New Profit is a national venture philanthropy organization committed to catalyzing the impact of social entrepreneurs who are expanding access and opportunity in America. Its investment in DAWI’s work will expand the organization’s ability to help grow the field and put business ownership in the hands of workers who are locked out of good jobs and opportunities to own businesses.

“New Profit’s partnership comes at a critical time for our field,” said Julian McKinley, DAWI Co-Executive Director. “The entire employee ownership field is experiencing a period of growth, and it’s more important than ever to ensure workers have access to true wealth-building opportunities and agency in the workplace. New Profit’s investment will help expand access to ownership for the most vulnerable workers.”

DAWI joins New Profit’s Build portfolio alongside Fair Count, Interfaith America, The Workers Lab, and Village of Wisdom. DAWI is proud to join the portfolio alongside these organizations, each of which is providing community-rooted solutions to systemic challenges.
