2016-2017 Líderes Cooperativistas en Acción (LCA) Cohort

Over the course of this eight-month program, cohort members evolved into leaders and trained peer advisers that support their own businesses and the growing need in startups, mature cooperatives, and conversions.

This first ever cohort, is made up of Spanish-speaking members of worker cooperatives from across the country dedicated to advancing the field of immigrant-led cooperatives.

Cohort Bios

Anahi Rojas
Español: Anahi Rojas es de Guanajuato, México y emigró a los Estados Unidos hace unos 8 años. Ella es la orgullosa madre de Emmanuel y Alexa. Anahi tiene amplia experiencia en el mundo de las cooperativas de haber sido un trabajadora-propietaria de 2 cooperativas de limpieza ecológica por más de 6 años. Estar en una cooperativa le dio la experiencia gratificante de la toma de decisiones de negocio junto con sus compañeras Socias, la celebración de diversos puestos de dirección y de ser un propietario! Anahi cree profundamente en el modelo cooperativo, ya que ella ha sido testigo de primera mano cómo su sentido del individualismo se transformó en una primera mentalidad de la comunidad. Ella acaba de terminar su año de duración en el" Fellowship desarrollador de Cooperación" con la organizacion de "Prospera", donde desarrolló un plan de individual de crecimiento, sesiones de co-facilitadora y prestaba apoyo a los fundadores emergentes en el programa. Actualmente está trabajando para convertirse en una desarrolladora de cooperativas y proporcionar experiencia en consultoría en comunicaciones de cooperación y gobernabilidad, tiene planes a futuro de poder lanzar una cooperativa en la que logre hacer un cambio real en la vida y en su comunidad.

English: Anahi Rojas is from Guanajuato, Mexico and emigrated to the United States about eight years ago. She is the proud mother of Emmanuel and Alexa. Anahi has extensive experience in the world of cooperatives having been a worker-owner of two green cleaning cooperatives for over six years. Being in a cooperative gave her a rewarding experience of making business decisions along with her fellow co-owners, holding various management positions and being an owner! Anahi believes deeply in the cooperative model, since she has witnessed firsthand how her sense of individualism transformed to having a sense of community. She just completed her year-long "Cooperative Development Fellowship" with "Prospera", where she developed an individual growth plan, co-facilitator sessions and she supported emerging founders in the program. She is currently working to become a cooperative developer. She provides consulting on governance and coop communication. She has future plans to launch a cooperative in which she can make a real change in her life and in her community.

 
Armando Robles
Español: Nacio en 1969 en la Ciudad de Baja California Norte, México. En el año 2000 y con ayuda de su hermano menor Oscar entra a Republic Windows and Doors en la área de Mantenimiento.
En Republic había Sindicato pero era muy corrupto y manda a los trabajadores a una huelga que a fin termina en el fracaso de los trabajadores después de dos semanas de resistencia. A principio del 2004 fue invitado a participar en una campaña para cambiar el sindicato en el cual se involucra muy fuerte y el 10 de Noviembre del 2004 logran el cambio de sindicato con un gran margen. Entra el nuevo sindicato llamado United Eléctrical Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE) y se hace presidente del local 1110 de UE trabajando en la área de mantenimiento.
Desde el 2012, New Era Windows (Cooperativa) fue recuperada y Armando se ha involucrado en trabajador de Mantenimiento, pintura, producción, entrega de producto, compra de material prima y refacciones para el equipo ventas. También es representante de la Cooperativa a nivel local regional e internacional. Y con un propósito bien firme primero al éxito de New Era y el compromiso de ayudar a otros trabajadores a crear cooperativas.
 
English: Armando was born in 1969 in the City of Baja California del Norte, Mexico. In the year 2000 and with the help of his younger brother Oscar, he entered Republic Windows and Doors in the area of ​​Maintenance.
In Republic, there was a Union, but it was very corrupt and it sent the workers to a strike that ended in the failure of the workers after two weeks of resistance. At the beginning of 2004, he was invited to participate in a campaign to change the union in which he got very involved and on November 10, 2004 they achieved a change of union with a large margin of the vote. The new Union entered, called United Eléctrical Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE) and Armando became the president of the UE Local 1110 within the area of ​​maintenance. Since 2012, New Era Windows (Cooperative) was taken over by its workers. Armando has been involved in maintenance, painting, production, product delivery, purchase of raw material and spare parts for the sales team. He is also a representative of the Cooperative at the local and regional level, and with a firm purpose first towards the success of New Era and his commitment to help other workers create cooperatives.
 
Bianca Sanchez
Español: Mi nombre es Bianca Sanchez, tengo 33 años y soy originaria del estado de Puebla México. Tengo 2 hijos, uno de 16 años y otro de 4 años. Llegue a USA en el año 2005 y desde entonces estoy trabajando en Teamworks Cleaning en donde empecé a trabajar como limpiadora tiempo completo y a cargo de ordenar y repartir productos a cada equipo durante los siguientes ocho años y medio, también he participado en el crecimiento de la cooperativa. A finales del año 2013 comencé a trabajar un 95% de mi tiempo en la oficina y un dia como limpiadora o supervisando a otros equipos. También he estado a cargo de coordinar los horarios de suplentes, los días de descansos y vacaciones de trabajadores y miembros además de trabajar en el área de recursos humanos, además estamos en colaboración con GBBC como consultores en su desarrollo.   
 
English: My name is Bianca Sanchez, I am 33 years old and I am from the state of Puebla, Mexico. I have two children, 16 years old and four years old. I arrived in the USA in 2005 and since then I’ve been working at Teamworks Cleaning Coperative where I started to work as a full time cleaner and then became in charge of ordering and distributing products to each team through the next 8 1/2 years. I have also participated in the growth of cooperative. At the end of 2013, I started working 95% of my time in the office and a day as a cleaner or supervising other teams. I have also been in charge of coordinating the schedules of substitutes, vacation days of workers and members in addition to working in human resources. We are also doing consultation work with Green Broom Brigade Cooperative in Lompoc, CA.
 
Clara Calvo
Español: Hola mi nombre es Clara Calvo, vivo en la ciudad de New York desde el 1995, tengo tres hermosos hijos. He trabajado en una agencia de cuidado en el hogar por más de 15 año (Cooperativa Home Care). Me gusta compartir con todas clase de personas soy muy conversadora y comunicativa, también me gusta ir de compra con mis hijos, pasar tiempo con ellos. En mi tiempo libre hago reuniones para compartir con amigas, me gusta la música romántica algunas veces organizo una comida en mi casa y jugamos domino, bingo y hasta cantamos. Le temo a estar sola.
 
English: My name is Clara Calvo, I have lived in New York City since 1995 and I have 3 beautiful children. I have worked at Cooperative Home Care Associates for over 15 years. I like to be around all kinds of people. I am very conversational and communicative. I also like to go shopping with my children to spend time with them. In my free time, I have gatherings in my home with friends where we play dominos, eat together, and sing. My fear is being alone.
 
Elizabeth Arredondo
Español: Mi nombre es Elizabeth Arredondo, tengo 32 años, soy originaria de la Ciudad de Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. Llegue a este país en Julio del año 2007, empecé a trabajar en TeamWorks en Septiembre del 2008, pero por cuestiones de salud regrese a Mexico y no fue hasta en Agosto del 2010 que volví a este país. Tube la oportunidad de que regresar a trabajar en TW tiempo completo limpiando casas, ahora soy parte del equipo administrativo 80% de mi tiempo y 20% limpiando casas, he participado en diferentes eventos de la Federacion, soy parte de la mesa directiva de DAWI, ahora estamos ayudando a nuestra cooperativa hermana en la ciudad de Lompoc, CA. Green Broom Brigade Coop. en colaboracion del Instituto de TeamWorks.
 
English: My name is Elizabeth Arredondo, I'm 32 years old and originally from the City of Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. I arrived in this country in July of 2007 and started working at TeamWorks Cleaning Cooperative in September 2008, but for health reasons, I returned to Mexico. It was not until August of 2010 that I returned to this country. I had the opportunity to return to work in TeamWorks Cleaning Cooperative full time cleaning houses. Now, I am part of the administrative team 80% of my time and 20% cleaning houses. I have participated in different events held by the USFWC and am a part of the DAWI Board of Directors. We are currently helping our sister cooperative in the city of Lompoc, CA, Green Broom Brigade Coop as a part of the TeamWorks Institute.
 
Eulalio Guevara
Español: Eulalio Guevara es uno de los trabajadores fundadores de A Yard & A Half Landscaping Cooperative, donde ha trabajado como Gerente de Ventas de Mantenimiento desde 2008. Es graduado de University of Massachussets Green School, acreditada en el cuidado de tierras orgánicas por Northeast Organic Farming Association y tambien certificado como un maestro jardinero. El vino a la área de Boston de El Salvador en 1999, y vive en el Este de Boston con su esposa e hijo.
 
English: Eulalio Guevara is one of the founding worker-owners of A Yard & A Half Landscaping Cooperative, where he has worked as Maintenance Sales Manager since 2008. He is a graduate of UMass Green School, accredited in organic land care by the Northeast Organic Farming Association and Certify Master Gaderne by the He came to the Boston area from El Salvador in 1999, and lives in East Boston with his wife and son.
 
Euridici Hernández
Español: Mi nombre es Euridici Hernández, nacida en Santiago, Repubica Dominicana — el día 20 de Julio del año 1972. Hija biológica de la señora Denise Arias y el señor Virgilio Hernandez. Mis padres son nacido en Santiago, Republica Dominica. Yo estudie en Santo Domingo, República Dominicana desde kindergarten hasta el 10 grado. Yo llegué a los Estados Unidos el 25 de Julio del año 1991 y tenía 18 años de edad. Yo estudié Ingles pero la mayor parte me la pase trabando. Tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con una diseñadora gráfica. Al mismo tiempo ayudaba con el empaque de la mercancía. Mi sueño es estudiar para ser tarapeuta física y ayudar a las personas de mayor edad. A la edad de 28 años tuve el privilegio de dar a luz a mi hijo Jonnathan, quien nació en Noviembre 6, del año 2000. Fue el día más feliz de mi vida, un día muy especial en mi vida. Fue una maravillosa experiencia de ser madre y hoy mi hijo tiene 16 años de edad. Por ser un estudiante ejemplar el ha tenido la oportunidad de viajar a Roma, Orland y Canadá. Mi hijo quiere estudiar technologies en la universidad en Boston. Mi mayor deseo es de continuar con mis estudios y ser una gran terapeuta y pode r ayudar a todos los ancianos.
 
English: My name is Euridici Hernández, born in Santiago, Dominican Republic on July 20,1972. I studied in Santo Domingo, DR from kindergarten through 10th grade. I arrived in the United States on July 25, 1991 when I was 18 years old. I studied English but most of the time I spent working. I had the opportunity to work with a graphic designer and packing merchandise. My dream is to study to be a physical therapist and to help older people. At the age of 28, I had the privilege of giving birth to my son Jonnathan, who was born on November 6, 2000. It was the happiest day of my life, a very special day in my life. It was a wonderful experience to become a mother and today my son is 16 years old. 
 
Josefina Luna
Español: Soy Josefina Luna, vengo de latinoamericana, mi lugar de origen e Norte de República Dominicana. Mi infancia fue sin muchos biene materiales aunque con una gran riqueza de valores humanos transcurrió en convivencia con el cultivo de la tierra y la crianza de animales. Mi Madrina quien era educadora engendro en mi a muy temprana edad la pasión por la educasion y los libros. Creesi en medio de fuertes luchas sociales y políticas. Estudie educasion herramienta que me fue muy valiosa en mi militancia en contra del sistema político opresivo en mi país Después de terminar los estudios superiores fui a trabajar al centro de mi país, una área muy pobre fue ahí donde implemente junto con los padres un programa de cultivo para dar de comer a los alumnos de la escuela, (Es lo mas hermoso que hecho en mi vida). Vivo en USA por mas de dos secadas, qui crecieron mis dos hijas, desde que llegue me introduje a las luchas de las comunidades. En 2011 junto con unos pocos lideres comunitarios comencé a trabajar para crear a CERO una cooperativa formada por trabajadores, que opera dentro de la economía verde, con el claro propósito de crear desarrollo económico y social para comunidades excluidas. Tengo bien claro quien soy, tengo bien definida mi ideologías y valores, No tengo contradicciones en mi.
 
English: I am Josefina Luna, I come from Latin America, my place of origin is the North of the Dominican Republic. My childhood was without many material things but with a great wealth of human values and we coexisted, cultivating the land and caring for animals. My Godmother who was an educator engendered in me at a very early age a passion for education and books. I grew up in the midst of social and political struggles. After finishing high school, I went to work to the center of my country, a very poor area, where we implemented a food cultivation program to feed the students of the school. (It is the most beautiful thing I have done in my life.) I have lived in the U.S. for more 20 years, and it is where I have raised my two daughters. In 2011, together with a few community leaders, we started working to create a workers cooperative, which operates within the green economy, with a clear purpose of creating economic and social opportunities for excluded communities. I am very clear who I am, I have well defined ideologies and values, I have no contradictions within me.
 
Marisol Cruz
Español: Marisol Cruz es originaria de Puebla Mexico, estudio hasta la preparatoria (High School) en su país, hace 17 años que vive en Estados Unidos, ella vive con su esposo y sus dos hijos. Desde Marzo 2014 pertenece a Sí Se Puede Women’s Cooperative que ofrece servicios de limpieza del hogar y oficina, a trabajado en diferentes comités como Publicidad y Liderazgo, además de involucrase en diferentes actividades relacionadas con el movimiento Cooperativo. Una de sus paciones es informar a la comunidad, luchar en contra del maltrato al trabajador, racismo y ayudar a los mas necesitados.
 
English: Marisol Cruz is originally from Puebla, Mexico. She studied up to high school in her country and she has lived in the United States for 17 years. She lives with her husband and two children. Since March of 2014, she has been a member of Sí Se Puede Women's Cooperative that offers home and office cleaning services. She has participated in various committees such as marketing and leadership. One of her passions educating her community, fighting against worker mistreatment in the workplace, racism and to help the most needy.
 
Patri (Patricia) Gonzalez-Ramirez
Español: Patri González-Ramírez es trabajadora-dueña de Caracol Interpreter Coop, donde a través de la justicia del lenguaje apoyan el crecimiento de la capacidad multilingüe para organizaciones comunitarias y movimientos sociales en Nueva York y regiones aledañas. Patri cree en el potencial de lograr consenso y crear estructuras colectivas, democráticas y no jerárquicas basadas en la cooperación para lograr soluciones a muchos de los conflictos socio económicos que enfrentamos en nuestras comunidades y la sociedad en general. Tiene experiencia en desarrollar prácticas anti-opresivas, educación política, producción de medios de comunicación alternativos, activismo mediático, y programación cultural. Ha trabajado con el Proyecto Audre Lorde, Paper Tiger TV, Immigrant Movement International, Occupy Wall St, así como con redes informales de activistas y proyectos de base comunitaria que luchan por la justicia social y la liberación. Actualmente toma cursos a tiempo parcial para completar una maestría en Hunter College.
 
English: Patri González-Ramírez is a worker-owner of Caracol Interpreter Coop, where through language justice, they support the growth of multilingual capacity within community organizations and social movements in New York and surrounding regions. Patri believes in the potential for consensus building and collective, democratic and non-hierarchical structures based on cooperation to achieve solutions to many of the socio-economic problems we face in our communities and society at large. Patri has experience in developing anti-oppression practices, political education, alternative media production, media activism, and cultural programming. They have worked with the Audre Lorde Project, Paper Tiger TV, Immigrant Movement International, Occupy Wall St, as well as informal networks of activists and community-based projects working towards social justice and liberation. Patri is currently a part-time student at Hunter College working towards completing a Masters Degree.
 
Rodrigo Cala
Español: Rodrigo Cala was born in Mexico City, on a small family farm, and moved to Minnesota in 2004. In 2005, Rodrigo joined the Minnesota Food Association for support to begin farming. There he participated and successfully completed the Big River Farms Immigrant & Minority Farmer Training Program, Organic Farming Training and GAP training over the course of three years. In 2008, Rodrigo and his brother Juan Carlos purchased their farm, Cala Farm Origenes, LLC, located in Turtle Lake, Wis, and currently sell certified organic produce to various accounts in the Twin Cities. He also works as a trainer for the Latino Economic Development Center, a locally based non-profit focused on creating economic opportunities for Latinos.

Teresita Perez
Español: Soy Mexicana, tengo 52 años enfermera, trabaje 14 años en el Hospital de Pediatría del Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) Llegue a los Estados Unidos en el 2003 con dos de mis hijos Jonathan de 5 y Luis de 4 años de edad. Mi esposo estaba trabajando en este país y esa fue la razón por la que tomamos la decisión estar juntos en este país. En el 2006 fui invitada a iniciar con la cooperativa de Sí Se Puede We Can do It! Women’s Cooperative, en la cual fue la primera vez que yo inicie a trabajar en este país. Antes de estar en la cooperativa mi tiempo era para atender a mi familia esposo e hijos, en las horas de escuela de mis hijos pude inscribirme a clase de inglés y computación (básico) programas que ofrecen gratis para los adultos. Y esto me ayudado a compartir con la cooperativa y mi vida personal.
 
English: I am Mexican and am a 52 year-old nurse. I worked for 14 years in the Pediatric Hospital of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS). I arrived to the US in 2003 with two of my children: Jonathan, who was five, and Luis, who was four. My husband was working in this country and that was the reason we made the decision to come together. In 2006, I was invited to start the Sí Se Puede! Women's Cooperative, which was the first time I started working in this country. Before being in the cooperative, my time was spent taking care of my family. During my childrens’ school hours I was able to enroll in English and computer (basic) classes that were offered for free to adults. This helped me to share with the cooperative and within my personal life.
 
Yadira Fragoso
Español: Mi nombre es Liliana Yadira Fragoso Dominguez. Nací el 4 de Septiembre de 1861 en la Ciudad de México D. F. En México termine la Preparatoria en 1998 y en el 2000 me mudé a Brooklyn Nueva York. Trabajé en Chipotle Mexican Grill del 2004-2009 como Sevice Manager. En Agosto del 2008 inicie con la Cooperativa de Sí Se Puede lo que me llevo a tener dos trabajos. Finalmente en el 2009 decidí dejar Chipotle Mexican Grill y dedicarme de tiempo completo a SSP. Después de 8 años de formar parte de SSP, en Mayo del presente año decidí dejar SSP y formar parte de un nuevo proyecto de cooperativa que se está empezando a formar donde estamos creando productos de limpieza Naturales.
 
English: My name is Liliana Yadira Fragoso Dominguez. I was born on September 4 in Mexico City D.F. I finished high school in 1998 and in 2000, I moved to Brooklyn, New York. I worked at Chipotle Mexican Grill from 2004-2009 as Service Manager. In August 2008, I started with the Sí Se Puede! Womens’ Cooperative (SSP), which led me to have two jobs. Finally, in 2009, I decided to leave Chipotle Mexican Grill and dedicate full time to the cooperative. After eight years of being a part of SSP, in May of this year, I decided to leave SSP and be part of a new cooperative project to create natural cleaning products.
