RFP Issue Date: June 1, 2021
Response Due Date: June 21, 2021

The Democracy at Work Institute (DAWI) seeks an experienced, self-directed and collaborative person to consult on the expansion and strategic growth of our data program at a critical moment of infrastructure-building.

About DAWI
DAWI is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit movement-based think-and-do tank that expands the promise of cooperative business ownership to communities most directly affected by economic, social, and racial inequality. Our core work is supporting the expansion of democratic employee ownership of business as a strategy for racial, gender and economic equity. We do research and advocacy; we develop tools and new models; we train worker-owners and developers; and we convene communities of practice to ensure that further growth in the worker cooperative movement reaches low-income people, BIPOC communities and recent immigrants. We are affiliated with the US Federation of Worker Cooperatives, the national grassroots membership organization.

Values: In all our work, as well as internal operations, DAWI strives to embody our organizational values of Excellence, Equity, Entrepreneurialism, Collaboration, and Human-Centeredness.

Flexible, remote work: Having staff and contractors all over the country requires and allows us to create flexible working hours and locations. All staff and contractors are expected to be able and willing to learn and help improve the technological tools for remote working.

Strong team: We are a high-functioning, close-knit staff, and we want to work with a skilled and reliable colleague.
Growth potential: This is a contract in a maturing organization, and is key to our sustainability as we grow. The contract has potential to grow as the organization grows.

Stable organization: DAWI has a diversified revenue stream, multi-year funding, and a commitment to building an annual reserve that creates stability for our growing organization. Our annual budget for 2021 is just over $3 million, and our average staff tenure is over 5 years.

Project Overview
The Data Analyst works closely with our Metrics and Impact Analyst and Operations Administrator to implement and maintain research and evaluation projects, and help develop and inform the organization’s strategy in relation to data, evaluation and research. The work is a mix of technical data work, assessment and planning, and helping shape DAWI’s strategy.

This is a year-long contract for 16-24 hours/week, supporting the technical tasks of database management, setting up data processes for projects, and serving as a thought partner for research, program evaluation and DAWI’s emergent Data Together program. The contractor will have the autonomy to determine how best tasks are executed, within a defined set of outcomes.

DAWI has several long-standing and emergent projects that produce a large volume of data and require a high degree of data management. The Data Analyst will implement the day-to-day database management and will support staff and partners in utilizing our systems to directly advance their work and learnings.

During this crucial time in the field of worker ownership, DAWI is also in the process of experimenting with internal and field-wide approaches to data sharing and research in order to make our work more open and participatory. We aim for this approach to better support knowledge sharing between partners and create more buy-in from the workers and worker-owners that share their data with us. The Data Analyst will have the opportunity to shape and support the vision and implementation of this work.
